What does Blepharoplasty surgery involve?

The aim of blepharoplasty eyelid surgery, or reconstructive eyelid surgery, is to provide a fresh and more youthful appearance to the upper and lower eyelids of male and female patients.

It is an aesthetic surgery that assists in improving drooping eyelids, saggy upper eyelid skin, and can remove redundant upper eyelid skin and fatty tissue that may be obscuring vision. In lower eyelid blepharoplasty surgery, we are able to tighten any laxity of the lower eyelid, remove eye bags and remove any excess skin.

Droopy eyelid surgery, or ptosis surgery is also available. Transconjunctival blepharoplasty is another type of lower eyelid surgery that is often prescribed.

Blepharoplasty treatment and surgical procedure

For most patients, cosmetic eyelid surgery is usually performed under general aesthetic, although the option of local anaesthetic is there for those who are not squeamish.

Upper eyelid surgery takes an ellipse of skin, muscle, or underlying fat which is then excised by an external means of incision before being stitched back together. For lower eyelid blepharoplasty surgery, the skin is lifted from the lid by the surgeon so that excess fat may be removed.

Following lifting, the skin elasticity is re-draped and the appropriate amount of excess skin removed. Any eyelid laxity within the upper lids or lower lid can be corrected by a tightening procedure (canthopexy).

Recovery period

The recovery period is fairly straightforward although swelling can sometimes persist for some weeks (more so with lower blepharoplasty procedure.) After your reconstructive surgery it is recommended to sleep on your back on pillows and to avoid bending and lifting. We also recommend using witch-hazel eye pads to help reduce swelling and bruising; as the eyes may be sensitive after such operations and surgical procedures. Wearing sunglasses indoors and out may help reduce sensitivity.
