Natural cheek enhancement can create a subtle but significant change to the appearance of one’s face. It helps volumise as well as lift and creates a youthful reshaping.
Over time, skeletal changes, fat loss and collagen depletion will flatten the cheeks. This can accentuate sagging in other areas like the hollows under the eyes (tear troughs) and the jowls. The most common method of restoring (or volumising) the cheeks uses dermal fillers but fat transfer can also be used. Fat transfer using a combination of PureGraft and nanofat techniques may have longer-lasting effects but obviously is slightly more invasive and has a higher price tag. This technique is also extremely popular in The Banwell Clinic too.
DERMAL FILLERS TO CHEEKS
Dermal fillers are used to replace loss of tissue volume and restore facial contours, which occurs as we age. Fine lines and wrinkles can also be corrected and skin hydration improved.
Dermal fillers can be used at virtually any site on the face, more commonly, the cheeks, lips, glabella, nose to mouth lines (naso labial lines) and lines that run down from the corners of the mouth (marionette lines). This apporachto facial rejuvenation is part of the non-surgical facelift approach (‘liquid facelift’ also uses botulinum toxin with filler to freshen the face).
There are many types of dermal fillers on the market today, permanent and non-permanent. The most popular ones are Hyaluronic Acid based, Calcium Hydroxylapatite based and Polylactic Acid based. Fat transfer is also a long term option (see below).
Mr Banwell’s choice of product is the Juvederm range from Allergan. Juvederm contains Hyaluronic Acid which is a substance that occurs naturally in the body. It also contains lignocaine which is a local anaesthetic designed for the comfort of your treatment. Hyaluronic Acid is biodegradable, typically lasting between 6-12 months.
FAT TRANSFER TO CHEEKS
Many of Mr Banwell’s patients also ask about other approaches to cheek augmentation/enhancement. Dermal fillers are by far the quickest, easiest and best value to do this and an essential part of facial rejuvenation and ageing well. However, as mentioned above, your own fat (so-called ‘autologous’ as opposed to ‘synthetic’ fillers) can also be used to volumise, sculpt and shape the face. This can be performed in combination with other body/facial procedures under a general anaesthetic or indeed under a local anaesthetic for small ‘nanofat’ facial fat transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Cheek enhancement using filler or fat is a medical procedure and therefore is associated with potential risks and complications. It is usually performed as an outpatient procedure with you awake. Recovery is usually rapid but it is important not to rush around after the procedure and to take things easy. Mr Banwell’s nurses will discuss this with you.
Yes! Usually you are awake with this procedure unless you wish to combine it with other procedures whilst under anaesthetic. Some patients prefer some local anaesthetic cream to be applied beforehand but this is down to the individual. If this is your preference please let Mr Banwell’s team know and arrive 45 minutes before your appointment to have this applied.
The cost of cheek enhancement will vary depending upon how many syringes of hyaluronic acid are used and whether the procedure is performed in isolation or in addition to botox or lip filler (many patients decide to have combination treatments). The cost of fat transfer is more as the procedure is more involved and complex – Mr Banwell’s team would be happy to provide further information.
It is not unusual to have a little bruising after this procedure so please be prepared for this and bring some cover up with you to clinic. We recommend Beautiful Skin from Rationale Skin Care which is available in clinic to cover any bruising and to leave you with a healthy glow. However, some patients will get no bruising whatsoever so it does vary. Whilst we recommend you do not take supplements and arnica in the days leading up to your procedure, it is fine to take them afterwards. Remember you will be a little swollen too after the procedure so take things easy, avoid exercise for a few days and sleep on some pillows.
This is up to you! You are very much in control and you will decide how much filler we use. Mr Banwell’s excellent nurses will give you a mirror to to see the results as your cheeks are being enhanced and you can decide if it is just right or you would like a little more. Remember that cheek enhancement is an ongoing process and takes time. All the most famous artists take time to finish a painting and often will ‘tweak’ just to refine and make things better. Your face needs to look harmonious and cheek enhancement aims to bring out your natural beauty.
