Quick easy day case surgery
Otoplasty or prominent ear correction is a simple procedure which can hgave a major impact on emotional and psychological wellbeing. Remarkablhy it is a relatively quick operation. There are different techniques available but Dr Paul prefers to use a suture method to reshape the ear and to secure the position of the cartilage. He also uses other special techniques to encourage the cartilage to bend into shape.
Anatomy determines Surgical technique
Careful assessment at consultation is required to determine the best technique to use to correct the problem. Essentially there are two main problems that may be seen. They can occur separately or together. The commonest anatomical variant to be seen causing a prominent ear is loss of the so-called ‘antihelical fold’ in the upper part of the ear. In addition we also see that the cup or ‘shell’ of the ear close to the external auditory meatus (or entrance to the ear canal) may be enlarged or pushed putwards; this also contributes to prominence of the ears.
In the former case permanent clear sutures and diathermy techniques can help re-shape the absent ear crease. In the latter case we use so-called concho-mastoid sutures to set back the cup of the ear further back and closer to the head.
After the operation it is important to take things easy, avoid activities for a few weeks and contact sports for a couple of months. A headbandage is usually required for the first week and thereafter just a headband at night for 6 weeks.
