The Décolletage is generally considered to encompass the upper chest area from the clavicles (collar bones) down to the upper reaches of the breasts and some authorities would include the exposed cleavage area too.
This area is particularly vulnerable to exposure from the elements and especially visible light and ultraviolet light especially as the skin in this area is quite thin.
The Décolletage, until quite recently, has not been a focus for anti-ageing treatments as the attention has always been directed towards the face (and neck) areas. However, this area together with the dorsum (backs) of the hands can be a telling sign of ageing. The impact of UV radiation, visible light (HEV/blue light), intrinsic and extrinsic ageing and hormones (oestrogen, progesterone, androgens and pregnancy) cannot be underestimated.
Especially in the spring, summer and on holidays abroad many people will wear more revealing clothing or swimwear and the thin skin of the decolletage is more at risk of pigmentation, wrinkling, crepiness, loss of hydration and mottling. Ageing causes thinning of the epidermis and dermis and generally slower repair of natural homeostatic processes. Extrinsic ageing impact is related to lifestyle habit including UV exposure but also sleeping positions, smoking, alcohol and weight fluctuations.
Hormonal influences in perimenopause and menopause lead to faster collagen loss and decreased elasticity and moisture in the skin which in turn creates more wrinkling, sagging and crepiness.
All in all the décolletage is particularly sensitive to mutlfactorial ‘insults’ over time and thus a concerted approach to treatment is recommended.
There are a huge range of treatments that Dr Paul Banwell offers for the Décolletage. The cornerstone to his approach is the use of active topicals on a daily basis including a role for niacinamide, antioxidants, retinoids, hydrating hyaluronic acid, ceramides and regular moisturisers. One of our particular favourites is the RATIONALE decolletage crème designed specifically for this area to nourish and rehydrate.
Chemical peels and skin needling are also excellent options as part of a dedicated treatment regime.
Use of Sun Protection Factor creams with high level UV protection is fundamental to this approach and this should be used whenever the cleavage area is exposed to the sun and the elements in general.
One of Dr Paul’s other standout treatments and a patient favourite is the pain-free, uber relaxing Genesis prime treatment which is a combination radiofrequency (RF) and LED light treatment. It creates a warm fuzzy feeling that is beloved by all our patients.

Many treatments for the decolletage area are entirely pain free. Topical Actives can be applied as serums or crèmes and of course SPF usually is applied as a cream or superfluid. Our in-house Pantheons superpower – Genesis Prime – is also entirely pain-free. Of course skin boosters involve injections with a degree of discomfort as does CO2 laser treatments.

This will very depend on the condition of your Decolletage and the degree of damage with respect to pigmentation, fine lines, crepiness and wrinkles.
This is 100% essential! Sunscreen on the decolletage area is a fundamental method of minimising UV damage and damage to the skin in this area. It will help minimise pigmentation, crepiness and wrinkling.
