Mastopexy
Breast Uplift by Mr. BanwellBreast Uplift or mastopexy surgery is a useful technique to help reshape the breasts if the nipples are low or if you have excess stretchy skin.
Mastopexy (breast uplift) surgery is usually performed as a consequence of congenital developmental issues (eg. tubular breasts), post-pregnancy, post menopause or following weight loss through diet and exercise or by medications such as GLP-1 (eg. wegovy, Ozempic).
“Mastopexy surgery can significant improve self esteem following post pregnancy involutionary changes.”

Breast uplift surgery has several benefits. Firstly the primary aim is to raise the position of the nipple so rather than pointing downwards (or being too low) it is position more centrally on the breast. At the same time we perform an areolar reduction so that the areolar diameter is smaller. Lastly and perhaps just as importantly as raising the nipple, is that we tighten the skin envelope so that the breast tissue is contained within a tighter hammock. This gives the breast a more pert appearance. However, what a mastopexy cannot do is change the consistency of the breast tissue and make it firmer, nor can it change the actual consistency of the breast skin. The biggest hurdle to overcome with mastopexy surgery is the acceptance of the scarring. The classic mastopexy scar is the so-called anchor pattern appearance although sometimes for smaller uplift procedures a lollipop scar can be used or even a circum-areolar (peri-areolar) approach can be utilsed depending on the amount of excess/loose skin a patient has. Remember that scars take around 18 months to settle and regular massage with moisturiser and taping can improve scar quality over time. We also offer CO2 laser treatments for scars in the practice too.
A breast lift treatment attempts to naturally reshape the breast skin envelope to raise the position of the nipple and improve breast shape.

The decision for cosmetic surgery should not be taken lightly. This is why Mr Banwell believes that the consultation process with him and our Concierge is so important. Mr Banwell recommends a general anaesthetic undertaken by a specialist anaesthetist. The operation is generally performed as a day case and usually no drains are required after the operation.
We generally like to see you at least twice prior to your surgery, although Mr Banwell welcomes and encourages you to visit as many times as you require, to go through the steps and give you tips to allay any concerns you may have about your surgery and at the same time confirm the size, look and expected outcome you are trying to achieve and also to make sure that you are fully informed of what the procedure involves and the potential risks.
The breast can be lifted using a number of surgical techniques including the Wise pattern technique, possibly using a periareolar incision, as well as minimal scar techniques, such as a Lejour method and Benelli method. Mr Banwell will discuss these options with you.
After the uplifting operation there are no stitches to remove, as they are all internal. The hospital nurse or an office staff member will contact you after the operation to ensure that you have no problems during your convalescence. There will be post-op visits at one week, six weeks and six months. A crop-top/ athletic support bra is to be worn day and night for six weeks. We recommend no driving for two weeks post-operatively and no rigorous exercise for six weeks. At day 7 we will discuss the best way to achieve the optimum scar result.
There are both general and specific risks and Mr Banwell will talk to you in detail regarding these. General risks include slight pain, bruising and swelling, bleeding, wound infection, problems with general anaesthetic, abnormal scarring and keloid scars. The specific risks of breast lift include loss of sensation to the breast skin or nipple, asymmetry and bottoming out of the breast, asymmetry, nipple size differences and nipple height differences.
