GLP-1 Surgery

GLP-1 medications for weight loss & obesity

GLP-1 Surgery by Mr. Banwell

Many of our patients attending cosmetic surgery consultations at our locations in Harley Street and Sussex are now on GLP-1 medications.

WE ARE EXPERTS IN GLP-1 SURGERY.

Whether they are attending specifically for weight loss surgery having been on this medication or they happen to be on this medication co-incidentally, there are significant ramifications for both the surgery and indeed the general anaesthetic.

Dr Paul Banwell’s expertise and that of his PANTHEONS colleagues in managing patients on GLP-1 medications means you are in good hands and will receive the highest care and attention.

Paul Banwell - GLP-1 Surgery Overview

Special medication, Special considerations. Amazing Transformations

This medication can lead to dramatic physical and psychological changes for the better. However, the two main relevant considerations for a plastic surgeon (apart from volume loss of tissues and excess skin) are the specific changes to the quality of the skin and the potential adverse effects on general anaesthetic.

Due to the impact on gut motility (it becomes slower) and delayed gastric emptying from GLP-1 medications there is an increased risk of aspiration during anaesthetic and as our understanding of these drugs increases then we must be cautious on behalf of our patients. Our anaesthetists therefore ask that all patients stop their medication 6-8 weeks prior to surgery to minimise the likelihood of anaesthetic issues. Interestingly, as the availability of these medications is so widespread and easily accessible some patients do not even remember to declare this medication; for the reasons above and your own safety, please do make this clear to Dr Paul and his team.

The second issue relates to the impact of this medication on skin quality and laxity. Sudden and dramatic weight can have serious consequences on the skin not just in terms of the excess but on the quality too. Clinicians have therefore been experimenting with dosing regimes and the concept of microdosing to specifically help control the impact of the structure of the skin.

Advancing GLP-1 cosmetic surgery

Whilst we routinely remove excess skin and tighten contours in the breast, body and face with uplifts, tummy tucks, arm lifts and facelifts, very little attention is paid to trying to improve the quality of the skin following treatment. Dr Paul has taken an active interest in this field and has developed protocols to try to improve skin quality by using a combinations of non-surgical pain free technologies as well as injectable skin boosters and regenerative technologies including Genesis Prime, Jalupro, Rejuran and nanofat transfer. If you are interested in these exclusive protocols please contact us.

Ideally you should be at a steady (and comfortable) weight prior to surgery and of course you should have stopped your weight loss injections 6-8 weeks prior to your surgical date. You really should not need to go back on medication after surgery unless your surgery was not specifically to address weight loss issues.

Absolutely. Nicotine in cigarettes and vaping devices really does significantly affect healing and increases your risk of complications following surgery. Vaping with nicotine or smoking should stop 6-8 weeks prior to surgery.

Most likely yes although it does depend on your surgery. If this is specifically for weight loss then an overnight stay is usually the case. Breast augmentation or smaller procedures do not require an overnight stay

Most certainly. We often perform combined procedures but this does depend upon any pre-existing medical conditions and which procedures are required.
