Reasons to choose breast implant replacement surgery

Breast augmentation surgery with silicone implants has given millions of women the body that they have always wanted.

However, breast implants are not designed to last forever, and most women will exchange their existing breast implants within ten to fifteen years of their first breast augmentation.

As breast implants age, the risk of problems and complications increases. These are some of the most common reasons for breast implant exchange.

Implant Rupture

Even good-quality breast implants can sometimes rupture.

When silicone implants rupture, the contents of the implant tend to stay in nearby breast tissue, so you may notice a change in the size and shape of the breast implant, or a lump may develop.

Ruptured implants should be replaced with new implants.

Implant rippling

A degree of rippling occurs with most breast implants, but it can be a problem if it is visible or felt.

If your existing breast implants were placed on top of the muscle, rippling may be more obvious, especially if you are slim with little body fat.

Mr Banwell will be happy to discuss options such as replacing the current implants with a type less likely to ripple, or placing new implants under your chest muscles.

Capsular contracture

Capsular contracture is a common complication of breast augmentation surgery. It occurs when scar tissue forms around the implant. You may notice a hardening and a change in breast shape.

The risk of capsular contracture increases with age, and implant removal is always required.

Changes related to ageing

As breast tissue and skin lose elasticity over time, the position of the breast implant may change, moving further down the chest as it is no longer fully supported by the lax tissues.

In this case, Mr Banwell may exchange your current implants for a more modern, lighter version and perform a breast uplift at the same time to restore the position of the breasts.

Personal preferences

The implants used in your original breast augmentation surgery may no longer complement your body shape after weight changes or pregnancy.

Some women find that bigger or smaller implants would fit better with their desired body image than their current implants from their previous surgery. If smaller implants are used a breast lift may be required for best results.

About London

Our London Clinic is on Fitzroy Square, situated at the heart of Fitzrovia, a lively district just north of Oxford Street.

This part of London was developed in the late 18th century, and Fitzroy Square is one of several that boast elegant Georgian terraces and a calm, residential character.

Once home to artists, writers, and intellectuals, the area still carries a creative atmosphere, with galleries, studios, and cultural institutions nearby. Surrounding streets mix historic architecture with cafés, pubs, and independent shops, giving Fitzrovia a distinct village feel within central London.

Its location offers easy access to Bloomsbury, Soho, and Regent’s Park, making Fitzroy Square a peaceful yet connected corner of the city.
